Parish Rates Assembly – 1-7-’10
A Parish Assembly is an important meeting, as the decisions made affect the whole of a parish.
The Rates meeting is especially important, as this is the annual event at which the Connetable’s accounts are examined and the parish expenditure set for the following year.
How sad, therefore, that at our St Clement’s meeting tonight only 24 parishioners bothered to attend.
Worse still, neither of our parish Deputies were present – although I supposed we shouldn’t be surprised – they rarely attend parish Assemblies (didn’t attend last year’s Rates meeting either).
Funny how at election time they’re full of what they’ll do for the parish – only to disappear without trace until the next election! What do they do?
Throughout my ten years as parish Deputy, I made it my business to attend every parish Assembly and during that entire period doubt if I missed more than two or three. As for the present incumbents – Messrs Gorst and Dupre – they rarely attend any Parish Assembly.
